Between the Cracks

It's hard to believe my first born is just one inch shorter than me and he needs to shave...frequently. All the cliches exist for a reason - time gets ahead of you long before you see it leaving.

About 18 months ago, he was catching a cold or so I thought. Weeks passed and his voice was froggy with no other symptoms, none that I was yet aware of. He wasn't running a fever and all else was fine. Then it dawned on me. Three weeks, frog in his throat, no symptoms, frog comes and goes and a deeper version of "Mommy" fills the air between the cracks. Peter Brady! It's "Time to Change".

At first it was sort of unsettling for me. A huge shift in his growth just further punctuating his march toward independence. My sweet boy was evolving. Once I caught my breath again and got past the initial shock, I became entertained by it. My husband hadn't yet noticed. Later that night while watching tv, I nudged my husband and whispered, "Hey, notice anything different about him?". "Different, no what do you mean?" "Listen to him" I announced in hushed tones, pride over my new discovery gushing out of me. It all clicked, hubby got it and the rest of the evening he dealt with his own adjustments towards the new roads my son was about to lead us to.

It's exciting to watch them grow up and discover themselves but I do so long for those days when my sweet boy was forever on my hip and playing with my hair for security. Now we walk side by side, eye to eye and speak to one another; his deep voice to my maternal one sharing changes taken place and dreams to come. I'm blessed with my boy. He's sweet and kind with the gentlest of souls. He's a brilliant, deep thinker who searches for ways to make others laugh and bring sunshine to our world. Which he does every day.

That was beautiful. Your writing is amazing. It’s as if you wrote my story, or at least one I will likely be telling within the year.

My son was born yesterday. Now he’s 13. Time- such a mystery.

Now, back to read more of your blog...
